Na žalost se večine stereotipov posameznik priuči v mladih letih in slednje goji kot nespremenjene, neutemeljene ter neizpodbitne - kot je značilno za večino miselnih vzorcev. Izvor stereotipov,ki se jih posameznik priuči, so običajno starši, drugi družinski člani, učitelji, vrstniki, mediji, itd. Pozitivni stereotipi so lahko prav tako škodljivi za tiste, ki so predmet slednjih.
